Lenticular clouds are formed by strong winds crossing high ground. Downwind of the high ground they set up standing waves. Clouds form where the rising air reaches the point of condensation, and dissipate on the downwind side of the wave as they descend below it, resulting in long lines of cloud at right angles to the wind direction. They are the holy grail to glider pilots, who can climb in the rising air to altitudes several times the height of the high ground that causes the clouds.
