M50 Motorway
M50 Motorway
The M50 motorway looking west from the bridge near Shaw Common. The M50 motorway runs for twenty-two miles westward from the M5, junction 8, just north of Tewkesbury, to meet the A40 road and A449 road at Ross-on-Wye. Built between 1958 and 1960, it was one of the first motorways built in Britain. It is known as the 'Ross Spur'.

This road was originally planned by the post-war Labour government and was proposed by then Minister of Transport, Mr Barnes, though due to the financial constrains of the time, work on its construction did not commence until the later 1950s under the later Conservative government. The reason it was one of the very first motorways was to link the coal mines and steel production of South Wales with the industry and car manufacturing of the West Midlands.
