St Paul's Monastery and St Paul's Church, Jarrow
The ruins of the monastery in the foreground are partly post Norman (west range) and partly possibly from the 13th century (south range). It was the twin of St Peter's at Wearmouth in Sunderland and was built as a Benedictine monastery with sandstone blocks. The ruins are a Grade I listed building.

The building of the sandstone church began in 681 and parts of the 7th century church still survive. It was originally two separate churches joined by a tower built in stages between the 9th and 12th centuries. The nave was rebuilt in 1782 with later alterations in 1866. The church is also a Grade I listed building.
