Regarding the bells
Regarding the bells
This metal plate, difficult to read here because of the reflected light, explains that the church's two bells, dedicated to St David and St Patrick were recast and rededicated in 1944 to commemorate the sinking of two Great Western steam ferries, bearing the saints' names, during WW2: the St Patrick bombed by an attack from the air during her crossing from Rosslare in 1941, the St David sunk in 1944 when in use as a hospital ship off Italy. St Patrick's bell hangs closer to the sea and his beloved Ireland, St David's bell on the inland side nearer his beloved Wales.
Both bells were restored in 2003.
