Kirkabister Ness Lighthouse, Bressay
Kirkabister Ness Lighthouse, Bressay
Category B Listed lighthouse and associated buildings. The original lighthouse was by David and Thomas Stevenson, 1856 to August 1858, with additional buildings added around 1905. Bressay was electrified on 17 July 1967 and the fog siren was discontinued in 1987. The light was automated in 1989, monitored from Edinburgh. Shetland Amenity Trust purchased the outbuildings in 1995 and subsequently let them as holiday accommodation. On the 12 September 2012 the light, which has been operational for over 150 years, was permanently discontinued. A new light is now provided by Lerwick Port Authority who opted to erect a new light structure, which exhibits a 10 mile LED light showing the same character of flashing (2) every 20 seconds. The former lighthouse tower was transferred into the ownership of the Shetland Amenity Trust in June 2013.
