Portsmouth Harbour - Whale Island
The island is a naval educational establishment with the gunnery school there. The view is largely obscured by HMS Bristol. This was the RN's only Type 82 and conceived as a carrier escort. Unfortunately the carriers were cancelled and one author stated that Bristol comes near to being the RN's white elephant. She was built by Swan Hunter on the Tyne, launched in 1969 and commissioned in 1973. She had combination steam and gas turbine machinery with two of each, two shafts and 60,000 shaft horsepower for 28-30 knots. She is now permanently moored for training purposes and according to some sources her machinery has been stripped out to make way for teaching space.
I would have liked to see the machinery of a combination ship (COSAG). I did see on board HMS Fearless at the end and she was steam through and through with Y100 sets (or a similar variant). I also saw the preserved HMS Plymouth before she was sadly scrapped. I am afraid that future generations will not be able to see whole generations of warship technology.
