SS6740 : Challacombe: Barton Town

taken 18 years ago, near to Challacombe, Devon, England

Challacombe: Barton Town
Challacombe: Barton Town
Barton Town was one of four manors in the parish in 1086. The others were Radworthy, at well over 1000 feet up and now abandoned, Whitefield Barton and Wallover Barton. The name ‘Wallover’ suggests that Celts still lived here after the Saxons conquered the area. Seen centre image is a 19th century roundhouse or horse-engine house, in which horses once drove a thrashing machine
