The Crown Inn - sign, High Street, Lechlade-on-Thames, Glos
Records show that this old public house, formerly hotel, was known as The Crown as far back as 1692. The building itself is thought to be a few decades older. The sign of the Crown indicates loyalty to the reigning monarch. It has been used as an inn or pub sign for hundreds of years. In the past, when most people were illiterate, the sign was easily recognised by people. The Crown is almost as popular as the Red Lion as a pub name.
