Wiseman's Oby Mill (right) and Upton Black Mill drainage pump (left) can be seen in the distance.

The drainage and saw mill at Oby was a four-storey red brick towermill located beside the River Bure. The mill has a datestone incorporated in its tower structure and is believed to have been built in 1753. It stood on the Oby Manor House Estate and belonged to the Wyndeham Cremer family. Locally it was often referred to as Wiseman's Mill - as indeed it also is on the OS map - named after the Wisemans who were tentant farmers from before 1836 until after 1937. LinkExternal link

Upton Black drainage mill was named after its black tarred red brick tower, which had less batter in the upper section and was encircled with 5 iron bands. The boat shaped cap used to have a gallery with a petticoat and it once held a fan stage. A date stone inscribed 1800 was set under a window facing the river. The mill was converted into accommodation in 1985. LinkExternal link
