Geograph - photograph every grid square

The River Crake splits into two channels as it enters the square from the south, with a wooded island between them. No public access here nor anywhere in the square. The A 5084 road is much straighter than the narrow winding lane of 1890. In some places a curved length of old wall or hedge shows the old line, and more so at the layby at SD296858.

Lowick Green is a hamlet built on the edges of common land, which has also been used for industrial purposes. At SD298852 there is a small millpond that belonged to a tannery in 1890, and just north of it Lowick House. 'Spade Forge' (now a pair of houses with that name) is indicated on the west side of the road, where there was another larger pond next to the present A 5092 – there is still a weir on the stream (Otley Beck). The common was quarried at SD297853. The 1:25000 map is somewhat out-of date, as the 'Police Office' is now the 'Old Police House', and the row of houses facing the green has extended almost up to the A 5092.

For the adventurous, there is an area of rocky land, with old pits and quarries, in the south-eastern part of the square.
