NC8630 : Red deer in the hills

near to Kinbrace, Highland, Great Britain

Red deer in the hills
Red deer in the hills
... south of Kinbrace. The section of road between Borrobol Estate and Kinbrace is a good place to see and to photograph red deer, but the best time of the year is in late autumn and winter, when most visitors have long since left the area and returned to their homes in England. Many Highland estates offer fishing for wild salmon in their rivers and for brown trout in their lochs. Another source of income is deer stalking, and large herds of red deer can often be seen roaming the hillsides. The animals appear to know when it is safe to stay put, and on approaching them quietly and not leaving the car it is possible to take pictures at a fairly close range. This herd belongs to Borrobol Estate, located further south on the River Helmsdale.
