Jester's Tomb
Jester's Tomb
This is an early 18th century memorial in the churchyard of St Mary's is to the family jester to the Earl of Suffolk. Dickie Pearce is said to have been the last court jester in England. Supposedly he died after falling from the minstrel gallery in the adjacent Berkeley Castle during a performance, though an alternative version is that he was murdered. The tomb is inscribed with verse thought to have been written by Jonathan Swift.
