Drive to Sutton Place
This is one of the approaches to Sutton Place, a Grade 1 listed Tudor house which was built for Sir Richard Weston. The house has since been owned by a number of notable names, including the newspaper baron Lord Northcliffe, the Duke of Sutherland, Paul Getty, and Stanley J Seeger, for whom Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe designed at 20th century garden. With his developing interest in Jung, Jellicoe saw the design as an allegory of human evolution, with creation, life and aspiration. He made a Paradise Garden, a Moss Garden, a Music Garden, a Surrealist Garden and one of the finest features in any English garden: the Nicholson Wall. Sutton Place has since changed hands and is being further developed. There is a new Ellipse Garden and an orchard (on the slope where Jellicoe intended a cascade). The house is private, is now totally surrounded by trees, and the garden is only open on rare occasions.
