as seen across the river meadows from the Wey Navigation towpath, looking east. Send Church is situated a long way from the centre of the modern village with only one older property for company. Its position may be to do with the presence of the river - many churches were built close to a source of water. In some cases this was because they replaced pagan temples for which such sites were also frequently chosen, but there is no indication yet that this was the case here.
