Church Street, Old Woking
Church Street, Old Woking
This little cul-de-sac, with St Peter's church at its far end, is the most unspoiled part of Old Woking and before the railway came to what was then Woking Common, this was the heart of the surrounding area. St Peter's is of Norman origin but stands on the site of an earlier Saxon monastery. The original Saxon Church is thought to have been destroyed at same time that Chertsey Abbey was sacked by the Danes in 871. Its door still hangs on its original 11th century hinges and is held together by the original ironwork.
