Slate quarrying often created deep holes from which the stone had to be lifted. At Pen-yr-Orsedd this was achieved through the use of these 'Blondins', a cable system that could place a slate wagon at any point on the quarry floor beneath the wire. Although out of use they are now scheduled monuments.
