The is part of the original Cleveland ironstone mine. The start of the massive iron and steel industry on Teesside. Iron ore was discovered in a nearby stone quarry and commenced with the Old Drift(NZ563183) in 1850. This drift opened three years later at the top of a new incline. The mine finally closing in 1949.
