SJ8699 : The Spanking RogerSpanking Roger was the nickname of Major-General Roger Aytoun, 9th Laird of Inchdairnie in Fife (1749-1810), whose figure can be seen on the wall in Bill's photo. Entering the army in 1766, he became a Captain in the Grenadier Company of the 72nd Foot (Manchester Volunteers) with whom he served at the Siege of Gibraltar. By his marriage to the widowed Barbara Mynshull he acquired Chorlton Hall and a considerable fortune, but gambled it all away within five years and the deserted his wife to continue his military exploits. It is said that on the day of his marriage Aytoun got so drunk that he had to be held up by his friends during the service. Aytoun Street in Manchester city centre is named after him.
