Budding trees - a closer view of the buds
The trees lining the track are already developing buds. In medieval times they would have been used to commemorate St Barbara's day (4th December): branches cut on this day (from a variety of trees such as cherry, apple, birch, hazel, chestnut, plum, forsythia, elder or hawthorn) were put into a vase so that they would flower in time for Christmas, and thus brighten up the dark winter days.
