SZ4088 : Gone Forever
near to Ningwood, Isle of Wight, Great Britain

Gone Forever
The course of the Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport Railway heading east from the old Ningwood station. Taken from the site of the road bridge; this was removed after the closure of the line when the roads were realigned. The FYNR opened in 1888 and closed in 1953. It was always an impecunious affair, even by Island standards! When the Southern Railway was formed in 1923 to amalgamate all the railways in the south of England, it refused to take on this liability until forced to do so, but having done so it did its best to improve the line and boost its fortunes, but to no avail.
