Mutton's Drainage Mill - with brandnew fantail
Mutton's Drainage Mill - with brandnew fantail
Mutton's Mill, located on Fleet Dike, has been in the process of being restored since the mid 1970s. At the time this image TG4406 : Mutton's Mill was taken, a good year ago, the drainage mill was still missing its fantail. Only very recently the fantail was added, completing yet another step towards its full restoration, and it may not be too long before this attractive tower mill will once again be fully functional. A fantail, i.e. the small wheel affixed at the back of the cap, is set at right angles to the sails and it causes these to rotate, by turning the cap so that the sweeps are facing directly into the wind, when the wind blows against the side of the fantail blades.
