Quarry House, Leeds
Quarry House, Leeds
Opened in 1993 to house the DSS when it relocated from London, Quarry House is built on the site of the old Quarry Hill Flats which were constructed in the 1930's. It was the largest housing scheme in the country at the time, apparently modelled on the Karl Marx Hof flats in Vienna. The whole complex was demolished in 1978, the steel frame and concrete clad construction having proved unsuccessful. Pictures of the old flats may be viewed at LinkExternal link Besides Quarry House, the site also now houses the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Music and BBC Leeds. Quarry House straddles 2 squares - this side is in SE3133, the other in SE3033.
