High Thwaites
High Thwaites
No longer named on the latest edition of the OS 1:25000 map the farmstead of High Thwaites was situated on the old road that came from over Chop Gate into Ryedale. The name is Norse and is probably first mentioned in a 1583 document as "Harthwaite". In the 1851 and 1861 census's George Burrow (Barrows) is farming 67 acres there. During the WW2 Ernest Dale lived there with his mother. A German plane dropped two landmines, one landed behind High Thwaites and failed to explode. The dale was evacuated until it had been dealt with.
