The grave of Dr. Melus - a Medic of the Dark Ages
The grave of Dr. Melus - a Medic of the Dark Ages
This sixth century stone is one of the rare examples of gravestones in these islands to record the profession of the deceased, and the only one to bear the job description 'medicus'(=doctor). Standing on the south side of the church of St Cian, and hidden from the path by an ivy covered tomb, Bedd Melus is not easy to find. Fortunately, a local gentleman who had been repairing his grandfather's grave was able to direct me to it. I was, he said, the fourth person to have asked him for directions to the grave.
