Tomb of Katherine Swynford
Tomb of Katherine Swynford
In the Choir of St.Mary's Cathedral are the tombs of Katherine Swynford (1350-1403) and her daughter Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmoreland. Katherine was initially the mistress and latterly wife of John of Gaunt and Duchess of Lancaster. Her sister Phillipa married Geoffrey Chaucer. The tombs were despoiled during the Commonwealth but restored in the later 17th century.
