Goodnestone House
Goodnestone House
Goodnestone Park is the embodiment of an English country house, with its fine park, classical fašade and celebrated gardens. It is greatly to the credit of Margaret, Lady FitzWalter and her late husband, Lord FitzWalter, who died in October 2004 that it is thus. Following a fire in 1959, which destroyed the roof and gutted most of the upper two floors, the house could all too easily have joined the litany of the scores of other houses lost in the 1950s. Lord FitzWalter's agent advised him not to bother re-building and opt for a modern house. Happily the FitzWalters ignored the advice. The family marked three hundred years at Goodnestone last year.
