Spots of rusty orange
Spots of rusty orange
The rusty-orange colouration is caused by lichens that are growing on some of the tree trunks. Lichens are often the first to settle in places that lack soil and they can be found in extreme environments such as at high latitudes, in deserts or in the arctic; some lichens can even survive in space. Many lichens grow on the trunks and branches of trees. Because of their sensitivity to pollutants they have been widely used as pollution indicator organisms. LinkExternal link
