Deerhurst Church
Deerhurst Church
The village of Deerhurst is unusual in that it has two pre-conquest Anglo-Saxon churches Odda's Chapel SO8629 : Odda's Chapel and Abbot's Court and St Mary's church which was originally a Saxon minster and an important religious centre in the kingdom of the Hwicce (an area including Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire (the traditional pre-1974 county of Gloucestershire), much of Worcestershire and south-west Warwickshire). It was first recorded in 804 when land was given by Aethelric. Until the mid 11th century the community was autonimous, around 1059 the priory became a cell of the Abbey of St Denis near Paris.
My Halling/Hawling ancestors lived in this parish, the name appears as far back as the late 16th century in the parish records.
