Minsmere Chapel under restoration
Neglected over many years, this ancient building is all that remains of an extensive monastic settlement established here in the late C11, according to LinkExternal link . During the Second World War, a pill box (gun emplacement) was constructed within the walls and is visible here in both the east (shadowed) and south (sunny) facades. If the Nazi army had chosen to land north of London, this would be almost the first feasible landing point, given the muddy and estuarial nature of the coast line from the Thames as far as Aldeburgh. Needless to say that, if they had, no trace of this chapel would remain.
