Old bridge abutments, Brick Lane, East London
When the Eastern Counties Railway opened its original London terminus at Shoreditch in 1840, the lines came in at high level and the bridge over Brick Lane was situated here. In 1874, the Great Eastern Railway, as successors to the ECR, opened a new terminus at Liverpool Street, but for this, the lines were at a low level and passed (and still do) underneath Brick Lane. The original Shoreditch terminus, which by then had been renamed Bishopsgate, became relegated to the status of goods station, so the high level lines remained to give access to this, some remaining until the 1960s when the overbridge was demolished.
The East London Extension, now being built, will require Brick Lane to be bridged again to give access to the new Shoreditch station presently under construction.
