Cerrig Duon
Cerrig Duon
Cerrig Duon (the Black Stones) is a feature of the lower shore to the west of Tremlyd Point and forms ground to the east of the North Deep. Very fast currents flow through on the ebb tide particularly and scour away the sand which forms dunes in the channel to the north. Millennia of erosion here has shifted all but a number of large erratic boulders - the eponymous Cerrig Duon. I am sure that these are all that remain of drumlins which once stood at this point and recorded the movement of ice in a westerly direction through the 'Maesdu Gap' to the south of Great Orme's Head. At one time it is supposed that the high ground was occupied by the now vanished fortification of Castell Tremlyd.
