TQ2913 : Pyecombe, turnpike terrace

taken 10 years ago, near to Clayton, West Sussex, Great Britain

Pyecombe, turnpike terrace
Pyecombe, turnpike terrace
Looking north along the turnpike constructed in AD 1770 from Brighton to Lowell heath. This is now a footpath. In 1808 the carriageway was lowered and the spoil probably used to construct an earthbank at TQ294132 carrying the turnpike across Wish bottom. The modern A273, on the lowered carriageway, can be seen to the right.
