Pond formed in gypsum depression
Pond formed in gypsum depression
The area around Ripon [particularly on the north side] is noted for regular ground collapses caused by the dissolving of underground gypsum deposits. This has caused damage to properties in the city, whilst some open spaces within the city limits have never been built on because of this danger. North of the city along the Ure valley there are numerous depressions, some water filled like this one. The trees must have been here before the collapse as the water has killed them.
