Saxon Burh, Burpham
Saxon Burh, Burpham
This is the top of the fort that was built around the time of Alfred the Great to protect the Arun valley against the marauding Vikings. The stronghold was also designed as a central administrative point for the area many of which developed into boroughs. Burpham, however, was superseded by nearby Arundel and all that remains is a small village and the outline of a Saxon fort.
