Sundon South Chalk Pit
Sundon South Chalk Pit
A face shovel loading chalk into rail trucks for transport to the cement plant about a kilometre northwest, in 1974. The plant closed in 1976. See LinkExternal link.

As with many such quarries, the rail equipment was originally ex-World War I “army surplus”. Before the arrival of face shovels in the 1920s, material was extracted using an agricultural ploughing engine placed on the hill top, which pulled a harrow up the face, dislodging a uniform thin layer at each pass.
