Smedmore House
Built in 1620 by Sir William Clavell, Smedmore House was altered in the early C18, and enlarged in 1761. The Clavell family would continue to own it for more than two hundred years. The last Clavell at Smedmore was the Rev. John Clavell, who died a bachelor in 1833, and whose heiress was Louisa Pleydell, the wife of John Mansel. Although the Mansel family did not enjoy a continuous ownership of the house since, it nevertheless is a fourth generation Mansel that owns it today. The house is Grade II* Listed.
