Old canal line, Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Greenberfield
Old canal line, Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Greenberfield
When the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built, a pair of staircase locks were provided at Greenberfield at the eastern end of the summit level. But it was soon found that these locks used too much water, so the staircase pair were replaced by three single locks on an alignment slightly to the south of the original staircase. The line of the staircase locks can be seen in this photograph, with a blind-arch bridge where the road crossed the old line.
