SN0228 : Spite and Cant

taken 11 years ago, near to Castlebythe, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Great Britain

Spite and Cant
Spite and Cant
Unusual farm names which seem oddly unappealing to the Anglophone ear. However, 'spite' is derived from 'ysbyty' hospital/hospice and indicates either the former existence in the area of a monks' infirmary or, land owned by such monks.
Cant means a hundred and probably refers to a portion of land.
This was an almost entirely Welsh-speaking area up until the latter half of the C20.
