The grazing taking place here is the latest in a number of projects which is helping to improve the heathlands and coastal grasslands of the Lizard. Traditional forms of land use are now recognised as the most effective way of improving habitats for a wide variety of species.

Preparation for this work began last winter when the area was burnt under controlled conditions in a practice known as 'swailing'. This cleared away most the dead grasses, rushes and woody material and exposed much more of the ground to light and warmth. As well as the fresh growth of grass, a greater variety of flowering plants has grown here in the summer. The Shetland ponies will complete the cycle as they eat the new grass growth.
