SK4663 : Buttressed wall at Hardwick

taken 10 years ago, near to Rowthorne, Derbyshire, Great Britain

Buttressed wall at Hardwick
Buttressed wall at Hardwick
These huge buttresses support the retaining wall on the northwest side of Hardwick Old Hall. Above is a terrace. Could engineering problems with the site have influenced Bess in her decision to commence the building of the new Hardwick Hall before the old one was completed? (The well-known reason is that the death of her fourth husband in 1590 left her rich enough to build something grander).
