This road gives access from Byrness and Upper Redesdale to the Otterburn ranges LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) , an extensive area of high moorland in northern Northumberland. The area is criss-crossed by tarmac roads constructed for military purposes, but for all bar about 60 days a year, some or all of the range area is closed to the public LinkExternal link . The road which links Redesdale with Coquetdale, of which this is the western end, is however, normally open.
