Silver Birch
Silver Birch
Silver Birch (Betula pendula) beside a track on West Heath. Silver Birch trees are common on West Heath and North End where the soil is sand and gravel based, along with Beech and Hornbeam. They are relatively short lived trees, 60 to 80 years in southern England, often falling victim to fungal infection. This appears to be a very old specimen.
