NZ6505 : Disused sluice gate

taken 10 years ago, near to Westerdale, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Disused sluice gate
Disused sluice gate
Westerdale Mill has not been used since its dam was washed away in July 1930, but some of the 'fittings' remain, including the actual wooden gate here.
When open, this allowed water to return to the Esk, closing it would have directed the flow over the waterwheel on the end of the building which is now a house.
Some water still flows through, but the race is merely acting as a ditch - picking up surface drainage.
