in the late 12th century a Franciscan Abbey was built near this site. Destroyed by an English attack across East Lothian, known as "The Burnt Candlemas" St Mary's, from 14th-15th centuries, has suffered many times at the hands of the English. Fully restored in the 1970s. Photograph taken from Nungate Bridge.
