The canal, engineered by James Brindley, was opened in 1772 at a cost of over 100,000. It is 46 miles long, joins the River Severn at Stourport with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Great Haywood, had 104 numbered bridges, and has 45 locks, including the staircase at Botterham.
