SO2622 : Old birch trees

taken 11 years ago, near to Partrishow, Powys, Great Britain

Old birch trees
Old birch trees
The trees were growing on a very old boundary of the farmland and possibly grew from seed on the former wall where the seedlings had protection from nibbling sheep. The wall has collapsed to a grassy mound except for a few stones on edge which still showed.
There was no sign of fence-posts and wire so this part of the farmland was probably abandoned before barbed wire was made. The original field enclosure could have been made in the Iron Age.
