Oxford: The Priory & ? Public House
Far from sure quite what to make of this place!! The building dates from about 1445, if not earlier, when it was the dormitory of the Benedictine nuns of the Priory of St. Nicholas, Littlemore, commonly known as 'The Minchery', from the old English mynecu or minschen, meaning 'a nun'. Around 1600 the building changed use into a farmhouse, substantial alterations were made, and it became known as Minchery Farm. Around 1965, as the urban sprawl of Oxford swallowed up nearby farmland, it changed use again into a club known as Minchery Farm Country Club. Finally it became a pub with the intriguing name of 'The Priory & ?'. Today it is surrounded by the modern developments of The Oxford Science Park, the Kassam Stadium and the Ozone Leisure Complex. Whatever, it has the largest collection of tame picnic tables known to mankind, just some of which are on display here. The pub's website is here Link
