Horspath: Cuddesdon Road bridge
The bridge used to carry the Oxford to Princes Risborough railway line over Cuddesdon Road. The railway opened in 1864 but closed, just short of its centenary, in 1963.
Recently South Oxfordshire Council sought to have the bridge demolished but a vigorous "Save our bridge" campaign by the villagers, who argued that the enforced chicane in the road calmed through traffic and that the limited arch clearance stopped high sided vehicles using the road, was successful. Note the 30+ years old Queen's Silver Jubilee paintwork on the bridge parapet and the old style bus stop.
