Probably the most interesting place in this square, apart from Aston Villa football ground, was the Aston Manor Road Transport Museum. It was housed in the former Witton Tram Depot which was built in 1882, and ceased to house trams when Birmingham's original tram system closed in 1953.
The museum held a large collection of historic buses and other road vehicles. Due to financial disagreements with Birmingham City Council, too complicated to go into here, the museum closed at the end of October 2011. Now the building faces an uncertain future, as do the vehicles which were displayed there. Everything has to be removed by the end of the year.
It's a great pity the problems could not have been resolved, as Birmingham has lost a tourist attraction, and the fate of an important collection of vehicles is unknown.
