Steam engine "Old Ben"
This was in a courtyard belonging to the old Heriot Watt University site on Grassmarket and backing on to the Greyfriars graveyard. This engine had been used in a colliery and is an unusual engine with guide bars rather than parallel motion. It had obviously led a hard life as can be seen by the repair on the beam. This engine is now at Lady Victoria Colliery, Newtongrange.
